WHAT EXACTLY IS THE KETOGENIC DIET?

The ketogenic diet decreases the amount of carbohydrates (carbs) you eat, and increases the protein and fats in your diet.

HOW DOES THE KETO DIET EFFECT YOUR BODY?

The first form of food your body uses for energy is carbs, then fats, and then protein. So that means it’s the second in line’s turn to be used for energy, fat. Your body uses fat as energy when your carbohydrate stores are depleted. which can happen when you decrease the carb intake. Your body then uses ketones for energy. Ketones are created when body fat and dietary are broken down by the body.

ACID REFLUX AND FATTY FOODS

It is common that your heartburn is worse after eating foods with a lot of food. It takes your stomach more time to digest fat, which means that your stomach acid is working longer, increasing the chance that the valve (lower esophageal sphincter: LES) that separates the stomach and the esophagus (food tube) opens. It is difficult for the LES to stay closed the longer food is being digested in the stomach.

You may be wondering if you should be consuming healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil and avocados. It is a good idea to consume these because there are other benefits. Eating a majority carbs from whole foods, and protein, will help you stay away from consuming too much fat.

DOES IT MATTER WHAT CARBS I CONSUME IF I SHOULDN’T DO THE KETO DIET?

You may be thinking increase your carb intake if it is not a good idea to increase the amount of fat in your diet. People will typically think any carbs will be okay, but that is not true. Processed carbs are never recommended. Carbs from whole foods are always recommended.
